bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Chris, great work with this tree, very insightful. Did you end up "putting it on ebay" ?
If not how 'bout an update pic?

This tree is growing strongly and ramifying well. Here is a photo from this spring, about late May, I think. I have since candled this tree (July 4) and it is responding with new buds. I used a new (to me) method of candling everything except the smallest in one day. I will be reporting on its results when everything has come in. I am seeing good budding but it's different than what I usually see.

The second photo was taken last October, just after wiring this one.

Chris,
what was the range of needles left per branch end relative to position on tree? We generally leave 3-4 pairs (Boon says 5 or so on top, we get too much growth on healthy trees) on top up to all needles on the interiorw eak buds. John

Actually I left stubs on this one. It's funny, but the buds that are popping are almost all needle buds instead of right around the base of the candles.

Thanks, Todd!
My next project will come in February, when I intend to wrap the trunk down on itself to move the foliage mass closer to the top of the root base. With some work, the roots should then stand out more.

When you bring the apex down do you plan on using the same apex or will you bring up a branch that is currently farther down on the trunk? Are you doing a simple guy-wire to close down the C space, or will you do it mostly with wire wrap over raffia for more control?

You have done a great job hiding the straighter section of trunk. The only thing I wasn't sure about was the group of 3 small branches coming out that obscures the C curve. It thought it might be nicer if the branch that softens the curve came from around the back to the left.

I'll assume you have a plan for all this stuff, I just wanted to comment because it is an interesting tree and I like what you have done so far. It is fun to mull over.

Carmen, I hope to use the current branching as much as possible. Wire wrap over raffia is going to be important because the guy wire only pulls in one direction. I may need to go several.

Tell me which three branches you are talking about. Can you use the paint tool here and mark the ones you mean?

I played with it in Photoshop and erased the branches. I also took the liberty of shortening some needles and cleaned up your mess on the floor .

After looking at your JBP I went outside and took a picture of mine, but still don't have the nerve to post it. Funny, but it had some of those same branches I was questioning on yours.
