David Y,
While they may be considered a distraction, David N (sorry for the last initials, I just need to differentiate the two of you) has provided a virtual of what the pine would look like with a thinner canopy which enhances the look of struggle in the tree. The aerial roots give a good feel of a struggling pine.

Well I hate to say it but they aren't aerial roots, they are exposed roots. The problem this tree has is not the exposed roots. Neagari trees are not especially in favor right now, but probably were when this tree was planted. The problem with this tree is far too much trunk above where the roots end. My goal is to make the canopy far more compact and lower. It should disguise the upper trunk and hide the lack of taper. I have begun by jinning the lowest inside branch and started wiring. I will post a new photo very soon.

Chris

Wow, if it's a neagari, it really threw me. Then you are very right. It's much too tall. Keep us posted. Thanks

Okay, so now I am having trouble getting my photo files down to an acceptable size. Why would that be? Anyway, here's a link to photos of my work so far on the pine. I work 50 hours per week selling Hondas, so I can't usually get a big job done all at once. This one is being done in installments.

The idea is to make a radical change in the angle of the apex, bringing it back on itself and lowering the entire crown of the tree to just above the near-horizontal trunk line. To do this I will be using a piece of rebar as a lever, attached to the top. I will also be using an assistant to be named later. Tell me what you guys think so far?
