Japanese Balck Pine Progress Advice Required
Here are some photos of the tree beginning in June 2005 and the final one taken in March 2006. This season, (being September for us in Australia), I will re-pot into a bonsai container.
I am not sure what to do with the branch stump that remains on the lower right hand side as you view the image. I rather like it and have considered creating a dead wood look but I'm not sure if it would suit, any suggestions? Best regards Vito Last edited by XXXVVVCCC : 12-Mar-2006 at 03:01 AM. |

If it were my tree I would remove the dead branch. It is has an upward moving motion which detracts the eye from the form of the tree.
If you intent keeping the branch as a jin (deadwood), then I would add some taper to it and possible split or tear it to make it appear more natural. Straight, consistent diameter branches with right angle cuts do not look natural. Of cause this is only my opinion. Others here may have a completely different view. Don’t take any action until you receive more replies… Cheers, Stephen

Well 345 for a start i would look at the origin of branch no.1 which comes from no.2 branch. To me I would hide that by turning the tree anti clockwise and show that nebari off at the same time. The need for a stub jin might disappear altogether. A very healthy tree never-the-less.
Bonsai can also be described as the art of illusion so you are on the right path there. Regards Ash ![]()

First the branch stub, why not carve it into a jin, as stephenr says it would look better if it was directed downward. You can do this by carving away material on the underneath close to the trunk, and on the top further away from the trunk. As for the first branch, have you thought about removing it, I think a nice design can be built around the tree without a branch there. Another (though riskier) alternative could be to try and graft this to the trunk where it crosses the back. Admittedly I have only read about this in Bonsai Today but it can be done. Regards Ian |
