Here's the story on this tree, and more than 100 others.
Back in the late '80's/early '90's. my friend Warren Clark and I were consultants to a very large wholesale nursery in our area. Our job was to help them improve their bonsai product. (Yes. the dreaded mallsai. And, I believe that we did help!) One day the lady we were working for said they had more than 100 San Jose and Procumbens nana junipers that were used for harvesting cuttings. They found a more economical source for rooted cuttings, so they were getting rid of the stock plants. These were all in 5 to 10 gallon plastic containers, and had been on a watering system that also kept them fed. Over the years they became well developed trunk and branch wise. How much per, we asked. $5.00 each ok? she replied. We almost fell over. I rented a large stakeside trailer, and we tossed the junipers in like cordwood to the tune of 150. This was the BEST deal on old, mature junipers ever made. We sold them for $35 each, which was a giveaway, but we had to get rid of them. Made a pretty good profit, and made lots of folks happy. I still have several around. One of them, a San Jose, made it into the World Bonsai Contest 100, in 2002. Another one is part of the permanent exhibet at the GSBF bonsai garden in Oakland, CA The image is the 2002 photo of the San Jose referenced above.

WOW, Mike. what an excellent story! You guys must've thought she was BS-ing you at first. What a score!
Great tree. Very lovely Bunjin. The jins are dead on and complimentary. I love the pot, too. Do you know who made it? -Wm

The pot is Japanese. It's available form Bonsai Northwest, and I'm sure other dealers have it also. Check the link. I believe that it's from the Shigaraki Kiln. http://www.bonsainw.com/display.php...&Style=Japanese

G'day Mike...
A couple of great examples of "...You've got to do the best you can with the hand you've been delt...". And they're pretty nice trees as well... Great work again, Mike. Pat
