J. maple airlayer and chop
Here's another long term project - a standard J. maple chopped low after I removed an airlayer at the top. The base is encouraging. First pic is the resulting trunk, second pic is the separated airlayer.

Brian,
Nice. I was just telling Redpine and grampz last night, thats what I want to do to my Trident maple. Do you think its to late in the season to try an air layer here in Southern California? Its starting to get hot now. And if not how long do you air layer it for? Peace Bob

Bob, you should have plenty of time. This layer took about 8 weeks. All you really care about is that you get roots before you lose the leaves in the fall, and the separated layer gets established before harsh weather. Since you and I don't have freezing weather, and our growing season is at least 10 months, you should be fine.

Thanks Brian,
I am going for it. Thank God for long growing seasons. This will be my first. Bob

Oh yes, they are protected from the sun. Its almost to hot here for the maples, but I try. They are the hardests plants for me to grow here, unless I put them in containers and still then, the leaves burn. Thanks so much for the information.
Peace bob
