Itoigawa Shimpaku Cascade, 2 Years
This is a tree that I have been working on for about 2 years. Itoigawa shimpaku is my favorite tree for bonsai. Kishu is also nice, However, it is a much slow grower with darker foliage.
I found this tree at the nursery in a plastic 1 gallon container. It was a somewhat bare, straggly kind of bush. However, it did have major potential for a cascade. Unfortunately, I do not have a pic of it in the nursery container. The first pics you see are a little while after the inital styling. It was then put into a grow pot. I left it with with an abundance of foliage and branches. Shimpaku are known for branches dying off for seemingly no reason. It is sometimes a good idea to leave more for future options, just in case. The first pic is from 2 years ago. The second, is from about a year ago, the third, a little less than a year. The last 3 pics are recent. I did some light trimming recently. I am encouraging it to grow somewhat freely and keeping the structure loosly in check. As you can see, the tree is forming strong pads buy me doing this. When the tree gets some age to it and the interior of the pads hardens up, I will then do some fine wiring. I think I payed $29 for this tree |

Thank you all for the nice comments.....Turns out, I found a pic of the tree still in the plastic container. This was taken after a very light initial styling.
