Ito Shimpaku-thoughts About Restyling
This is an Ito-Shimpaku juniper of mine that I just got done wiring and thinning out.
•First-The apex bothers me because I think it needs to be more rounded. The problem is that the branch named Branch 1 drops down considerably and to the front and is very hard if not impossible to wire upwards to create a new apex without breaking it...even if I use raffia. •Second- I'm thinking about removing the lower right branch to make it moe asymetrical. Thoughts, suggestions, criticisms? TIA

Hey Gary,
beautiful tree. I say definately "NO" on removing the lower right branch. In the circle "area 1" it looks as if you have 2 branches forming the crown. Maybe you could remove one (left one?) and fill out the pad that is the crown with the remaining one branch. The new crown will look small at first. You can lessen the effect by tightening up the foliage pads as they look slightly over grown. In this picture the trunk gives the appearance of reverse taper. (?) can you post some side pics? where did you aquire this juniper? ~ken |

Gary,
I would say yes to removing the lower right hand branch. It may possibly look good as a jin.

As a jin it could be cool. I'd like to see a pic from the left side to see how far the lowest branch hangs down.

gary, first, beautiful tree. as far as restyling, i think just continuing along the lines of what you have would do. here is a very crude virt, i was looking at it and just thinned it out a bit. i think this would be a great tree to present to walter in the ask the master section to see what he thinks.

Hi..
this tree has great potential but I think the crown is too big now.. In this paint virtual i made the tree a bit shorter, made a jin of the lowest right branch and changed the pot.. the tree could still be placed a bit (just a little) to the left. I agree with chris. Take it to Walter. Great tree..

Here are some more pictures of the tree today.
I took some macro shots of the top. I got the tree from Martin Brussel some years ago. It's hard to find Ito's this size now.
