Istanbul
Hi,
Last weekend I had popped to Istanbul (Turkey). I had visited the Sultan Palace - Topkapi (not for the first time). I lunched there with some friends, on the way back I had noticed a very strange tree, at first I had thought that I had too much Raki (Arak) - I had seen a Cypress tree with Fig leaves. As I was stupid enough not to take my digital camera for this trip, I had used a camera of one of my friends which was not equipped at all for this kind of photography (the lens was not wide angel enough...), I had also had to scan the pictures and these are the poor results:

My goodness - those are amazing trees, Carmi. I don't think I've ever seen such a big old hollowed out beech!
Can you explain how the cypress got to be like that, with the fig growing out of it? Any guesses, at least? Best regards, Carl / OMC

Great pix Carmi!
I am not sure if it happens the same way there. But here in Northern Minnesota, you can find on any walk a large Silver Maple with Rowan (Mountain Ash) growing from many of the creases or hollows in the trees. I am told that in order for a M.A. seed to be able to sprout, it must first pass thru the digestive system of a bird, where the outer shell will disolve, and then be able to sprout. The birds nest, rest, or sit in the maples and pass these ready for soil seeds. They are mainly in maples, I wonder why. With a fig, I am not sure, but the picture is so interesting to see the similarities. Paul

Seeing the tree, my only explanation is that the gardeners of the Sultan wanted to please him by creating a unique tree (usually they were eunuchs).
The trunk of the Cypress been hollowed and then the Fig was planted inside the trunk. There were other beautiful trees there - next time I will take my digital camera.

I have seen this with the Strangler Fig.
http://www.rainforestaustralia.com/canopy7.htm I couldnt find a photo that did the tree justice, but what happens is the host tree dies and what is left is what we know as a "wraparound". |

This Fig is a Ficus Carica, not the Ficus Destruens, both trees are very old and very live and vigor.
