Informal Upright Juniper

This procumbens (15" H) was purchased in March 2001 as rough bonsai stock. It was pruned, wired, potted and left to grow for a year. In February 2002, it was wired again. It will now be left to grow for another season with the objective of balancing the foliage mass of the pads. The following pictures show the progress. Any suggestions for further refinement would be welcomed. Looking at suggestions made for other trees in the gallery is always eye opening. Thanks. (Photo taken 04/14/002)

Re: Informal Upright Juniper

David,
I like your tree very well. You did an excellent job with the wiring.
I'm curious, were the curves in the trunk there at time of purchase, or did you enhance them? They're great curves.....gives the tree much movement. You have reason to be very pleased with this tree. It can only improve with age.....when the branches become thicker and with increased ramification. When this happens, don't let the pads become so thick that you can't see the branching and ramification. Many people become intrigued with thick pads, and let the interesting structure of the tree become hidden. Remember the concept, "keep the tree open enough to let the birds fly through".
Again, I think your tree is great.

Re: Informal Upright Juniper

Robert,

The trunk was not wired. All of the movement was there. This tree was reportedly grown for bonsai by Masaru Ishii in California before being brought to Louisiana. It was one of six at the nursery and naturally I think I got the best one. I agree with you in keeping spaces between and inside of each pad, clouds within clouds within clouds. That's where I'm hoping to go with this tree. I believe a better impression of age can be created if the branch ramification can be seen with smaller individual pads. Thanks for the compliments.

Re: Informal Upright Juniper

David,
I like what you did with the tree very much. I don't know if you find this too but with "Procumbens Nana" the growth is so fast that with in a year the foliage can really get out of hand even if your pinching it alot. PN seems to want to sprout new foliage in every nook and crany available. I try to keep those new sprouts cleaned off and anything that wants to grow vertically I pinch off so the pads radiate on the horizontal. I said I TRY!

I just got done cleaning out a collected PN I've been working on that I let grow last year without pinching so it would thicken up some branches. I have a photo of it from about six years ago after I rescued it from a city project.

I would let the 2 lower branches grow without any pinching to ticken them up and pinch and keep the other branches cleaned out.

Great tree!

Lookat the wierd trunk on this one. I'll be taking some pics soon and I'll post a more recent photo. Got to get a digital camera one of these days!

Nice tree. I don't see a thing to do to improve it.

Re: Informal Upright Juniper

Gary this is wonderful material. It would be very difficult to improve on the wild base of the tree, but I can see some interesting possibilities in the foliage.

I reshaped it a bit to a style bordering on a half cascade to give it some movement, and added a hanging branch to fill in the missing portion of the "triangle"

Regards,

Matt

Re: Informal Upright Juniper

I like it Matt!
That picture was taken about 5 or 6 yrs ago. I have to get a new one up. Tommorrow I'll Look and see if it can be done. I just got done thinning it out and I can see the branches better. Thanks for the virtual.

I wish I would have had the resorces to get all the junipers the city was taking out that day. I came upon it by accident and they were laying out in the hot sun with their roots exposed. I took 6 but only one made it. They were all Procumbens nana that had been in the ground next to a parking lot for about 20 years. Yhere must have been
50 of them.
