Carmi: If this is your first white pine, I would just try to keep it alive for the first year. In your desert climate they may not do to well. One of the habits that bonsai enthusiasts have is to see a plant material that they like and take it home to someplace that the material does not like. This causes great frustration for the enthusiast. At 104 degrees you will want to keep this tree in shade, under shade cloth or under a larger tree or in an alcove to protect it from direct sun. Watering will be very importiant, water well but do not over water. Best of luck with your new tree.

Rips:

Under another tree? I saw a discovery program about how trees fight each other, and I don't know if they do what they're claimed to do, I will recommend the shade cloth

Hi Jules, That is how the pine got its name of White Pine, due to the two tone nature of the needles. There kind of white down the edges and green down the center. Here in Fresno, if you manage to keep one for any length of time, they start to lose more of the white cast and look more green. I think in the right milder conditions they would keep that white flush in color that has made them popular, not to mention the compactness of the needles. The needle packs grow in clusters of 5 rather than 2 for a black pine. Hence, its other popular name "5 needle pine".

Yes the tu-tone paint job is a result of the stomatic stripe. On some varieties that is more pronounced than others, as well as a nice blue color some J. White Pine have, at least until the wintertime, when they can turn a little gold if the frost hits them.

I do not think they like the heat, so this will be a test of your ingenuity, Carmi

Regards,

Matt

Juels: You have been answered by the Masters.
btw, I prefer to drink beer - but out of the large can…

Reps: Thank you for your kind and educated answer.
The temperatures in the summer in Tokyo (Japan) are around the 90 F, I have seen there some beautiful white pine bonsai specimens.

Jose: Taller trees can make exelent high shade. Bonsai will do well under them. Shade cloth is just another solution to the problem of too much sun.
