Pinus Parviflora
Last week, on my visit to the Nederland's, I had bought this Pinus Parviflora from the Lodder Vleuten nursery.
It was a neglected pre Bonsai but has a great potential. It took me at least two hours to cut (and search) the wires (remembering Jules colored wire…). When I bought the tree the temperature at the nursery was 15 C (59 F), when I arrived home the temperature was (and is) about 40 C (104 F). To make it easier to acclimatize I decided to repot it into a bigger pot. I chose a Tokoname pot that I had bought last year in the USA (there are no pots for sell in Israel). I had read somewhere that the white pine has a smooth trunk and some time it is grafted on trunk of a black pine, is mine grated too? Next year I will rewire and pinch the necessary buds. As it is my first Pinus Parviflora, I would love to have all the help I can get, mainly on three points: 1. Timing - what to do and when, our weather is similar to Los Angelis, very hot and humid almost no rain. 2. Styling. 3. Soil and fertilizing. I will appreciate all the advice and opinion only from your own self-experience. I "admire" all this new "Bonsai Masters", that never grew a tree more than two years, quoting form books (that we all read…) uploading ridicules "Bonsai" photos that in two years they will be ashamed of - at least I did… I think this deserves another thread and a serious discussion. Sorry, for my "chutzpa" (which is a Hebrew word…) but it did bother me for a long time. Pleas bar in mind that my mother tongues is Hebrew (I was born in Jerusalem), and I had to "break my teeth" in English…. Shalom, Moshe.

Yes, the tree is grafted somewhere around an 5-8cm below the first branch where you see the texture of the bark changes.
White pine would develop rough bark eventually, but the process is much longer than black pine. Since your pine is actually growing on white pine roots, it should be more vigorous and stronger. Many folks in this area have difficulty with white pine. It is probably a good idea to keep the pot itself shielded from excessive heat. I have recently found this year that those trees that have just a bit of protection from summer sun show better needle color. Hopefully your tree wasn't bareroot at import? This can be especially tough on pines. When imported to the US from Japan, they must be barerooted, consequently we don't really do anything for about 18 months to be sure the tree has stabilized and is growing well. I, too, in 5 years time hope to be a little embarassed by the photos I am uploading today ![]() Regards, Matt

Hi Matt,
Thanks, for your advice. The tree was not bareroot (Do not ask why...) Do you ever sleep?

I would take the top leader off at the natural break in the foliage. If you squint and look at the tree you can see where to take it off.I would take the long leader off in the upper right hand side of the tree. Open a hole in the foliage by selective pruning in the lower right area of the tree. Wire the upper branches in the apex for a larger spread, and in the classical triangular shape. Round the top of the apex slightly. Extend the lower left branch for more balance due to the large curve of the trunk. Make sure to keep the apex centered right over the trunk or the tree will start to look like it will fall over.
This is a very nice start, and some great material. You have the potential for a great tree, Congratulations and good luck, Bonsaial Last edited by bonsaial1 : 20-Jul-2002 at 03:12 AM. |
