Big Smile Ideas For This Little Apple Tree? Help Needed

Hi,

two years ago I bought a little apple tree which has not made much progress since then.

So, I have just put in a growing box.

How would you go on with this tree?

Your ideas are very welcome.

Thank you,

Thomas

Thomas,

I would say you've taken all the action you need to for the time being.

You may want to cosnider what size you ultimately want- that will lead to other decisions regarding years of growth before cutting back. That first branch may be your new leader. Or another might devlop that would be better.

Let it grow freely. Fertilize profusely. When it is several feet tall you might consider it's first chop back, but it needs time...

Thomas, nice tree, nice box, nice strategy. I agree with the plan of selecting a new leader and "lettin 'er rip". Maybe 2 years in the box to let the roots settle, then a couple of years in a grow bed. I'm not as sure about letting it grow to several feet without any intervention (pruning back and changing leaders) for that long. Seems to me that you should be doing some basic architecting of the trunk in the form of twisting and curving it. I sure like the idea I read on this forum recently of putting 3 or 4 spikes or bars in the form of a teepee around it and twisting the trunk around them, securing it at the top. Seems like the first, very long branch, if used as the leader would be very well adapted to that approach.

Well, maybe Glenn, the king of pre-bonsai material will weigh in with something definitive on what to do next.

Good luck, Fred
