Simon,
Trees can be super-resilient to these sorts of things. I don't know the particular species that you are working with, but my guess from what I know of alders in nature is that it would be among those that are good at healing wounds. I'd definitely try to see if it can heal. I'd get that wire out from on top of the scarred area, and put some cut paste on, if you have it - I've been told that white glue or just about anything else works as well, if you don't. And then let the tree grow freely at the top. This should promote healing. Watch what happens. At the very worst, you'll have a chance to learn about the healing process proceeds. At best, the tree will heal nicely as well. Good luck! Old Mister Crow

hiya, evergreen alder is a very hardy little tree. You will find buds all over so there will be many more chances to choose branches. For the cut you are worred about, it will heal with paste to protect it. I wouldnt try to fill it with anything. The area that closes in over the wound will be swollen, hence the reason for cutting a hollow in the first place. You will be surprised. Just make sure to feed it and you will be fine ![]() cheers juliet |
