I Knew There Was A Tree In There Somewhere
I started out with this procumbens juniper in March of 03. A little over a year ago. This is what it looked like at purchase.

This was what I came up with after the initial styling also in March of 03. All that foliage on this thin trunk. for the time being I tried to convince myself that this was as good as it was going to get with this tree even though I really wasn't satisified with it at all. In fact I was quite dissatsified with it.

This Spring I repotted it in a different pot, and even though it filled in pretty good and made for a good silhouette shot, I still was very unhappy with it. I had to dig a little deeper and find what I knew was lurking in there.

I finally found something I think I can live with. A 90 degree turn and some heavy chopping, a different pot, and this one gets a new lease on life.

Thomas I like what you've done. Better angle to me as well. And this pot adds much more to the tree also. nice one!

Thomas,
I certainly LOVE what you have found in your material. Very interesting, I too did the same with a procumbens, and actually had VERY similar results, ie. the twist in the trunk. However, there is one thing I am hoping you can answer. Don't take this as a negative remark on your tree, I have this same problem too. If you look up and down the trunk, I notice that there are all those little bumps and stuff, and I was wondering if you knew a good way to get rid of them, or if they will just grow out in time? Thanks a bunch, and good luck with your lovely tree. Dane |

Hi Dane,
Sorry but the bumps come with the territory so to speak. They are more pronounced in younger material and will diminish somewhat with age, but will always be there to some extent i'm afraid. Too bad it couldn't have bark like this Eastern Red Cedar.

Yeah I know,
The guy I just styled is 6 years old, and has little bumps all over the place. I guess I could hate it, or get used to it, and make it part of the trees character, I think I'll do that, Thanks for answering my question, also, that Eastern Red Cedar's bark is something else! Dane |
