I Bought This Pot Bound Kallay Juniper Today
Got it cheap.
The trunk measures 3" at the base after I scraped the top covering of old needles off...I wish I would have done that before I took the pics. I just don't know where I'll go with the top...time will tell. I'll work more on it this week. That's my son the helper.

I think it will be about 12" when I'm finished.
I'll have to cut it back little by little to get new foliage to sprout nearer the trunk. That low branch that I cut off on the left really thickened the bottom of the trunk. Forgot to put the picture in.

Gary, nice material, and that looks like a good selection for the front & David's proposed trrukline, which you might have been considering too, from that selection as a "front." It even looks a little like the coke squiggle next to it!
![]() One thing I wanted to point out is the idea that it is not always suitable to stub branches off flush with the trunk on a conifer. If you instead leave a stub that is 2-4x the branch thickness, you can carve and shape it and create a nice feature, where instead you'll just have a flat scar at best. I say "at best" because even if you want the branch to heal over flush, a tapering jin will reduce the dieback and produce a level scar as the tree heals over it. A flush cut on a conifer will usually lead to a depression (of one kind or another). It looks like you have a good selection of branches to work with and have left some natural areas for deadwood, and the pruned branches are small at this point, so this should not be a big deal at all with this tree. I only point this out in case someone else sees this and comes to the understanding that they should always cut branches flush. Regards, Matt

Thanks guys,
It even looks a little like the coke squiggle next to it! I didn't notice that! Matt, I follow you. The only flush cuts are: the one at the very base of the trunk and the one where the branch goes to the left....right above it(arrows). The rest will be jinned. In this case I decided to use a round concave cutter and take those 2 completely off because i didn't feel jin would be appropriate in those locations. What I will do is cover those 2 wounds with bonsi bond and put a little brown shoe polish on them. Good advice though Matt. ![]()
