The Humble Privet

Regards to Matt and ripsgreentree who both like me fight the corner for the much underated privet genre.

This little beauty is only one year in training . lifted off the backyard hedge last september and planted in a garden bed,it then got potted up in the spring (large plastic nursery pot)and duely wired,i have now slipped it into its present pot ready to keep pinching out and reducing leaf size. It measures only 20 cm or 8 inches in its pot,(a candidate for shohin?)

I know it has a long way to go yet but i ask you what other species gives you so much so quick >
(realy i like conifers and pines ) wink wink ,,!!!!!!!

Are you guys using the evergeen or deciduous varieties?

If evergreen, count me in amongst your ranks! I have about 15 or so of them rescued from a hedge.

Snubbed by many, but really good material...

I think the last tree - the windswept looking one is really intriguing. It would probably benefit from removing that vertical branch and going with the much more interesting twisted part. I don't know how much foliage each of those branches is carrying, but you could reduce it over time, and show some of that really interesting trunk line from the front.

Also that one little branch in the back (coming out of the inside of the curve) really isn't in a good position.

Long live the privet!

Matt
