Re: A humble beginning

This is my Oak that I recovered from a forrest nearby. It was barely sticking out from the heather, hence the literary style.
Both the Zelkova and the Oak are bare and outside and we had a little frost. Luckily there was not much rain and the soil was drained sufficiently.

Hey [i:f78cc5c9b7]eric[/i:f78cc5c9b7],
welcome to the forum.
Fellow rookie here...I'm sure if you come up w/ some specific questions for these gents, they could help.

Pretty cool looking Zelkova. I assume since your new, you got that one that way or maybe just re-potted it (as opposed to grew it or trained it). I have only starter stock, I should get a little more of a developed tree (like yours) so I get a little daily satisfaction (something to look at) of having a "bonsai," all mine are not even "potensai" yet.

I also like ethically collecting from the wild (I have a couple Cali-Coastal Oak), but more on that later.
cya,

Re: A humble beginning

Thank you Hack,
Yes the Zelkova I bought. The Oak is my own experiment.
I want to trim them early spring. I would like to have a lower branch on the Oak but I don't know how yet. If you look closely you see that it half-way has a sharp bent and then goes up again. Kinda weird. The moss is my own idea.

Inside I have a small Ficus Benjamina (my own exp.) and a weird looking Serrisa Foutida (gift from my folks who didin't have a clue). I will get a picture from that one so maybe will have an idea what to do with the Serissa.
Gentlemen, beautifull site and great forum.
Regards, Eric

Hi Eric,

A fellow kaaskop hear and also an absolute Bonsai newbie. I like your zelkova ! I have just stopped getting more trees and am going to concentrate on what I have here... I have some weird stuff too. Here's a picture of a Kampferfoelie stump (really don't known the latin name )
Have fun !!

René

Re: A humble beginning

Hello Rene,
Kamperfoeli it's latin name is Caprifoliaceae and in english it is Honeysuckle. I looked it up on the WWW - I'm not that knowledgable.
Good luck with the stump... I would be at loss what to do with it. My Serissa has those stumps too and now has lots of new shoots. Looks like a silly bush with big stumps inside...
Cheerio,

Eric

Re: A humble beginning

Eric,

Thanks for the info. I don't know what I'm going to do with it. We replaced this one with a new, smaller one because it had grown to large. When I dug out the plant I thought it would be a shame to trow it away so I planted it in a bucket. It is throwing new buds allover. Ah well, we'll see what it will do in spring and go from there...

rgds, René
