How Would You Train This Ugly Maple Tree
I found a maple tree in a nursery which needs a lot of TLC yesterday...and i was wonder if this was your tree how would you train it?
height = 14" from the base to the spliting branches... trunkline of the base is about 1.5" inch the only foliage that grows between the root and the spliting branch is the rootstock original variety... right now I am planning of number of what to do with this tree 1. The extreme one is because it already has a good trunk id like to chop in just above where the suckers have just grown...and wait till the suckers are big enough to do more chopping and training... 2. Remove the suckers and chop the trunk before split branches...and look for ways to make new foliage grown just a little above the suckers... 3. remove the right branch...and look for ways to make new foliage grown just a little above the suckers... Now would this be the time to do one of these things? or wait till spring? Cheers, Mike |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME
|
I do not know if a airlayer is correct... but, if it weas going to be done, I would do it just below the point of the two branches, thus getting a double trunk. The problem is I do not know if the two trunks are differing enough to give this a good look.

the distance between the graft site and twin trunk is about 5 inches
and the two trunks are spreading about 1 inch wide per inch in height... is this not good for a twin trunk? i could probably bring it closer together.... and air layer it just below the graft sites...

Dont call the tree ugly... it makes the tree sad and it will get depressed and die on you... I learned that the hard way.

I just have to ask.. What kind of maple is the graft and what kind is the root stock? I ask because they usually do these grafts for a reason right? Like the graft portion is usually not one that has good rooting and is not likely to survive well on its own. Or is this not much of a concern for pot culture?

the rootstock is probably a regular Acer Palmatum. The graft looks like some kind of red dissectum.. possibly crimson queen or something. Aside from the root reasons, I think it is just easier to graft this cultivar rather than take cuttings or grow from seeds(is not true to its parent)

I forgot to ask what cultivar I bought
but the graft probably is Emperor I, the leaves are much beggier than the crimson queens that I have...and yea i will have to let this sit through the next spring for some work... Is it not good to do some root trim and air layer at the same time right? |
