Big Smile How Should I Style My New Bonsai? Can't Decide.

Here are the pictures of my new Schilling's Yaupon Holly(Ilex vomitoria 'Schillings's):

-------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------

What style should I make it in formal upright, broom style, or Goza Kake? I like them all and i can't decide what is right for it, I guess I need to look at my tree more.
Also since i moved I have sadly lost two things, one being my almost 3 year old bonsai and the other being my book that has some of the best trimming techniques i have found. So does anyone know where I can find some good trimming guides on the net?

Please post pictures to the forum rather than using inline images.

Thanks.

You could begin by cutting it back to basically what is in your last photo and then post pictures from various sides for consideration.

Yes, I am serious. It's [like an] olive and will bud back profusely. There are a lot of straight, uninteresting shoots at this point, above which there will be little (no) possibility for use.

Regards,

Matt

[Edited to correct that bit about the olive]

So is this type of holly really on olive? So Just chop most shoots off then look at the branch structure, not a bad idea.

sorry about that Holly/olive, it's like 100 degrees here and I am zapped. I meant to type that it behaves "like an" olive.

It's a holly, but for all intents and purposes a shrub that will behave the same as an olive if you cut it back hard.

Regards,

Matt

Opinion Wiring advice

Just a little advice on wiring yupon hollys.
Dont try to bend too much at on time.
The limbs on these trees are very brittle like, I guess its a really hard wood.
but if you try to get greedy with the bending it will snap at the trunk on you.
It is nowhere near as flexable as a juniper or a maple.
Just thought you should know.................

When I saw your Holly, the branching reminded me of of old oak or maybe an old sugar maple. Look up pictures of old trees then look at your holly again. Imagine the old tree in your holly.
Hope this helps.
