Hoary old barberry
I collected this bush from my yard. I was amazed when I uncovered its base last year. Its a small bush, and easily replaced. I couldn't let the opportunity pass for it to become something more.
I will probably remove some of the larger branches. Not all are visible in the picture, but some grow horizontally or are too long and straight. If I can air layer three of the trunks that I have in mind, branches that look out of place on this tree can become a nice group of trees on their own. I envision a sumo broom of sorts. I have borrowed a picture of an old oak from Treebeard's thread (thank you). Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks. |

Hi Shirefox! I love barberrys, they have a lot of character. Yours is just super, and the style you have chosen for it will suit it beautifully.
My contest tree this year was a barberry.... anyway, I've been told that they don't like their roots messed with much, which seems strange for such a strongly growing bush. A nurseryman told me this just last week....? Does anyone have some advice as to whether this is true, and if so, what can be done to reduce roots? If you wait too long to wire the shoots, they get brittle, so wire them before they lignify. Don't pinch back the young leaves too often, or you might lose a branch. Don't ever let it dry out. They don't come back from that. Joanie
