Re: Hinoki restyled

Your tree sure looks nice, but I don't exactly love that dead wood.
Just a total amateur's opinion, though..
Do what you think as best.

Re: Hinoki restyled

Jhill, nice look. I see the story, the tree was hit by lightening. This killed the top and caused the tree to grow a new apex to survive..... I think I remember the storm Keep it up!

Jhill...
I'm still learning virtuals, so practised on a easy one...yours! I like the tree. The next three pics are self explanatory. The two jins may be worth thinking about! The no jin leave the tree much more boring, I think.

Two jins. All this talk about jin is making me think it's martini time (Gin, that is). Too bad I have a bad cold...

Re: Hinoki restyled

I see. It really does look pretty boring without the jinned part.
I think I'd go with the two jins, like in Earl's virtual no.3

Re: Hinoki restyled

I would leave the jin on the main branch. I would remove the left leader, and make the jin the top of the tree, thereby shortening it to that point. i would pull all the branches in a downward movement to simulate age. Prune back hard some of the lower branches to induce growth closer to the trunk. The hinoki sometimes will sprout from old wood but it is a crap shoot at best. Plant into a larger shallow tray. I think that you have a good start here, and the plant will have a fine future no matter what you do.
Best regards, Bonsaial
