Hinoki (first Try)

Is this ok? Found it cheap and is my first try. I'm partial to tropicals and deciduous trees. I figured I better try one of these.
Feel free to tell me whats right or wrong.
TIA
-Steve

Hi Steve,
Not sure what you had to begin with.. doesn't look like much was removed? The first picture hides the long lil to no taper in the trunk line. A tapered line helps with the illusion of an aged tree.
All old trees don't necessarily have a tapered trunk but in the art we use the tapered look for effect.. specially when there not many other aged parts of the tree.. ie. bark, roots, knarled trunk...
With my limited view, 2D, I can see a line going to the first right branch and up.. see pic 1, green lime line of your second view.
..also, played with it a bit in paintshop for a virtual showing initial styling and down the road possiblites..

Not sure what the roots are doing at the base of the trunk and for me this will play a strong part in my decision making..

.. this is just one view of what may be many posibilities..

Thanks BMon,
I'll get you a closer view of the area mentioned and root area.
This was a typical H.Cypress found at a Lowes garden center for a bargain price prior to my chopping. (basicly round full almout teardrop shape).

'eres pic 2 of the virtual.
.. I would work the tree in stages .. not doing the big cut down til next spring.. at that time I'd also get some of the major bends in the trunk and branches, letting it rest for a year or two tip pruning for shape..

Tom,
I know the pic is 2D but the one branch you see on the right is actually 2 branches. The form you have in your virtual pic might not work on those branches...I don't know....maybe they will.
I will submit a new picture when I get home today. Your virtual is food for thought tho.

Yes, cutting it down to that size of the virtual is a good start. Then you can look at wiring it. It is too tall with no taper.

Having extra branches is rarely a problem. They can always be cut off if they don't fit the final design.

Regards,

Matt

Can this member get away with the taller look of foliage because his tree has better taper? The foliage on top looks similar.

This tree is so tipical of many of the Hinoki's grown for landscape nurseries.. dominate low branches allowed to grow and shade branches furter up to establish or exist.. until into the apex .. where there is another flush of strong growth. I find trees in this stage difficult to work with without going literati style.

My only hands on experience is a shortee , 7"H from rim of pot.
I found it in a local landscape nursery chain for $20. US..
.. it has been slow going now for 'bout 4 years..
