I love it. Having killed all my hinoki I think your success is impressive.

I have two itsy bitsy teensy tiny problems with your tree. Is the lowest wired branch on the right a jin, or is it a branch wired up? I can't tell from the photo. Either way it is pointing up to the branch above it. All other branches on the tree are angled down. So I made a virt of your virt, angling the two jins at the base downward to reflect the rest of the branches.

I say "hell of a job Rob!"

I have thought about things like you might attempt, the grafting foliage issue. For some reason though, I have a feeling that since these trees don't back bud, not sure that grafts and things would take. However, I have no proof of this.

I will say that these trees seem to have a reputation for having reverse taper at the base. You would think that with this being such a common problem, that there would be a ton of information out there on the subject. I have read that many bonsai artists don't work with hinkoki because they are difficult and they do not back bud. Maybe this is the reason for Hinkoi info not being mainstream.

The other hinokoi that I am training has a sort of slight reverse taper, not so bad that it is distracting though. My teacher had put forth the idea, a couple of years ago, that if I was unhappy with it, an air layer would be an option. However, since the outcome was really questionable, I opted, with the next repot to just drop it down in the pot a bit. It worked ok. However, I decided that the very slight imperfection was not worth the risk of ruining my years of work for a slight improvement.

I am very curious to see how any of your grafting works on your hinoko. Please post pics through the process if you attempt it. We need all the information we can get for this species.

I did attempt thread grafts on a lawson cypress, which is in the same genus but doesn't have the whorling foliege of a hinoki. Unfortunatly the tree 'passed on' before the grafts were complete, although I swear they were beginning to take. These trees are fast growing; they thicken and heal wounds quickly if gven the right conditions (plenty of water, no cold winds and lots of sunlight).

So here I present my chamaecyparis. I don't know the exact species, it's probably a hybrid, and currently about 45cm (18inches) high. You can see where I chopped it and got the new leader, and I have layered 2 branchlets (which are beginning to root in the small pot). I used a bend piece of wire to pin them down into the small pot, they root quite readily.

I plan to separate these and re-attach them on the tree at a later date. When I thread grafted before, I used the green branchlets. I removed all the foliege save for a single bud on the tip, and threaded that through the trunk. As long as the threads are protected from strong sun and wind, they won't dry out.

I'll definetely try and experiment with it and keep everyone updated

A further note to UK growers: There is some sort of beetle going around that eats chamaecyparis, it drains the sap from green areas of the tree, which will suddenly go brown and drop foliege. Its an invasive pest but apparently responds to pesticides. Be careful if buying new stock and indroducing it into your collection

Hello Carmen, thanks for the compliment.. You are right on the money with your virt. Actually, those jins are there more for wire anchors for other branches at the moment. Most likely that jin underneath the anchoring branch will be removed. It is not only being used for a wire anchor for other branches, but it is also is being used to train a small sub branch there. I just tucked the small subranch from the anchoring branch behind the jin. I figured this was a short term better idea than wiring because I didn't want to accidentally break any crucial foliage. However, I have noticed that some of the foliage on that main branch has started to die. I hope its not an indication that the whole branch will die. I really need that branch. However, If need be, I'll come up with something else.

I really enjoy the virts you come up with on this site. You have a very good eye for seeing balance and movement.
