Hibiscus

This Hibiscus rosa sinsensis is 35 cm high, 25 years old. I made it from a cutting that I took in 1978 in Eilat on the Red Sea from a tree on our hotel terrasse.

It is a medicre bonsai by itlsef. With the flowers it is, of course, a major attraction.
Opinions?

Re: Hibiscus

Walter,

I kind of like the tree by itself. It's kind of hard to imagine the tree without the flowers, but I get the impression that it is a simple, yet elegant one.

Re: Hibiscus

Those flowers are too much for that pot, it would look much better if you got a different coloured pot, like a brighter colour. Otherwise it is very nice indeed.

Re: Hibiscus

Hi Walter,
Very nice indeed!! Did you have a problem with reducing the leaf size? I have one that is pretty old not sure exactly but I would guess it to be around 10 years. I blooms all the time but the trunk is about 3' tall. Maybe I could layer it to shorten the trunk. The trunk is about 2.5". I thought about trying to Bonsai it and this pic has definetly got me thinking.
Thanks for showing this tree very very nice.

Re: Hibiscus

Nice tree, Walter. It's a little on the small side compared to the usual trees you post Did you force this tree to bloom in the greenhouse? I thought it was still winter over there.

I think the pot goes pretty well with this tree. In my opinion the white and cream color pots only look right when used with flowering trees and it looks like you've got that taken care of.

Re: Hibiscus

It looks terrific Walter. I love the color of the pot. It goes with the trunk beautifully. I hope you don't mind, but I have used it as wallpaper on my desktop.

Re: Hibiscus

Since you all seem to be so intersted, here is the history of the tree:
In 1978 I had vacation in Eilat, Israe. on the Red Sea. On the hotel terrace there was this hibiscus and we broke off a branch to have a souvenir. Sure enough it rootend and in 1984 it already was something that I called bonsai at the time. It was pathetic, really.

Re: Hibiscus

This is a picture in 1993.
I keep the tree in the living room front window over winter. By end of April I cut off all foliage, repot the tree and put it into the grenhouse. This is what makes small foliage eventually. BTW, the flowers will always stay the same size, one canot make them smaller.
As you can see, the nebari is not so good. I plan to airlayer the tree this Apri to get better surface rootage.

Water a lot and feed a lot, especially organically!
