Here's another of my 'projects' (Embedded Pics Warning)
Hi all,
Its that time of the year again where the saps a rising and you can style up hawthorns without much fear of the dreaded crack. well without too much fear that is i heard one whilst styling this up today, wee bit of cut paste and am sure its gonna be just fine. This started out life as a tall relatively straight bit of yamadori i collected i think 3-4 seasons ago though i am not 100% sure on this. I arched the top over last year 50% of the way to where it is now, i completed the bend today and did a bit of styling based on my drawing. (see attached) The pots gonna go next year but its there for the moment This is by no means a tree with a substancial thick trunk but the trunk does have a fair amount of character with a few old wounds and general knobbly bits. My final end goal is the drawing but its not fixed and i could save it from a fair amount of thinning out tomorrow based on any suggestions from here. I have photo shopped what i propose for tomorrows chopping, but am still open for ideas. Cheers ![]() |

the big nearly 360 degree bend....
did you add cuts in it to bend it back with ease? or did you just bend it back with the wire? |

Bent back with wire
![]() I considered cuts before i started but with such a thin bark i though it would respond better if i took the 2 seasons to make the bend, i was in no real hurry The trick is wait till the saps rising with these trees as they snap like dry twigs when dormant..I think it works as a literati, it would have never worked as anything else as there is no real girth on the trunk. Maybe i might add some more movement onto the trunk at a later stage. It has a horizontal crescent bend in the trunk just marginally below the soil level. i might have a wee look at it when its getting repotted next year. Back to my original query. Any comments on how well its working just now or with my proposed idea would be fabby doo ![]() |

nice tree to work with
hey man you got ya self some nice material their. Definately lita style if it was mine i would change the flow in the trunk, lita looks nice with a bend at the top coming down to greet you. Even fan out a dropping head to each side, then a couple of side branches to work with you would need a rear and possibly two to the sides but make one longer to give the eye something to draw to, the other shorter.
They make nice bonsai hey i dug one up in the wild some 5 year ago it was app 5mt tall but had a nice leader about two foot up so i chopped it, its gowing great i will have to post a pick for ya cheers glenn |

Yeah they do make nice trees to work with if you work on them are the right time of year I have a few of them out the back all awaiting some inspiration. My latest find has a massive area of dead wood which looks like its had some form of wet rot in it so i am trying to figure out a way to consolidate it just now ![]() |
