Hemlock

Hello

I found this tree two years ago, i potted it and trained it a bit but now think its gone down hill and want to try and recover this tree into something good. Photo 1 - overall tree from side, Photo 2 - foliage from above, Photo 3 - Same as one but without white background. Any virtuals are welcome!

James

Re: Hemlock

Hello

I was sketching wolfgangs juniper and thought of this idea for the hemlock. The apex would be bought up and the foliage refined - it does look a bit one sided but a large sabamiki may balance this.

Your thoughts please
James

Re: Hemlock

James,

The trunk seems thin and bendable. How about bending it up and making a literati ?

regards, René

René

The trunk isnt that bendable unfortuately - i had thought about that but the area nearest the roots is quite hard and i doubt it would put up with the bending. Interesting idea though - ill look again tomorrow to see if it will.

THE RESULT

Hello

Well heres the result of 1 hours work with the hemlock. I managed (with some help from a bit of 2 x 2 " wood and a few fixings) to pull up the tree into literati and developed the foliage pads to pull them round into the horizontal once again - although it will take a couple of weeks / months for the foliage itself to pull itself round to the right position - with the help of some sunlight - Ha!!! what sunlight!!! . The wood was the only way to keep the trunk from flexing back to the original position and it will be removed in a couple of seasons - hopefully The result is a graceful tree that almost conforms to René's virtual apart from it has an apex - the praise must go to him for the literati design - i just wouldnt have thought of doing it!! . In a couple of seasons time i think it will look great - especially when its repotted - i dont think that flower pot quite works somehow

Any comments welcome
James

Re: Hemlock

BJ.. nice change. I saw the original cascade and did not give it much hope. Now with the restyle I can see a future in a couple of years. Rene sure called it, the tree wasn't going anywhere as a cascade! Jay

Re: Hemlock

Hi james,

I think this looks better than the cascade. I still like it better without the top but that's just my personal opinion. I can imagine that you prefer it like it is. I never saw anyone use a piece of wood like you did. Interesting technique. I guess you will be able to remove it when the trunk thickens. Just for the fun of it I made two virtuals of your tree. One with and one without the top. I added a Tokoname pot too.
Good luck and have fun,

René
