Help wanted on Pinus Sylvestris/Larix Decidua
Hello,
In my garden is this Pinus Sylvestris which I collected as seedling, back in 1997. It has a trunk diameter of 1,5-2 cm and is 44 cm high. I think it would make a nice Literati. I don't know hoe to make it that way, so I'm open to all suggestions. Also in my garden is this Larix Decidua, also collected as seedling in 1997. It has a trunk of 2 cm thick and is 50 cm high. This could be a Literati aswell? but I dont know how to make it yet. Other suggestions are welcome aswell. Wessel |

Virtuals
Since no one reacted
on this tread, I had to do something virtual with the trees. Please give me comment on the virtuals and put me in the right direction. I would also like to hear/see what kind of pot I should use. Thanks Wessel |

I think a copy of Bonsai Techniques One by Naka would help you out a lot - these trees have bar branches and a lack of taper + not much movement as originally created, and that makes them look like telegraph poles.
I would probably cut the larch back to the first branch pair and wire one up as a new apex and wire the other down. The pine would probably go back in the ground. Regards, Matt

I would have to agree with Matt that the pine looks like a few years in the ground could do it some good. The branches look a little spindly. Also it doesn't look like it's quite in tip-top condition, so a few years in the ground should prepare it for the rigours of bonsai training

With a lot of wire and raffia of course .Check out this article on the BSF website- http://bonsai-bsf.com/bending_cypre...ing_cypress.htm . It shows a good example of turning a telephone pole into a show quality tree. As a matter of fact, I collected a bald cypress this year that I will be doing something similar with. I could not tell you whether this design would be possible with your two species as I do not work with either of them.

growing bed, in the meantime: nursery stock
My suggestion is as Matt had said: place them both back in the ground and let them go wild for a few years. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
In the meantime: visit your local nursery and select specimens that will have promise. You'll have more to work on and less frustration and possibly the risk of killing your two that you've gathered from your landscape. Best, vance hanna

Hi All,
I've left the Pinus in the garden to grow more, as you all suggested. I still wanted to do something with the Larch. After wiring it in the decired shape, I've put the tree in a growing box. I hope I did a good job in wiring the tree, offcourse the electrical wire will go in the future, I left it for the time being. About what has been said about the taper in the trunk of the Larch, sorry but I don't agree here. For a Literati, taper in the trunk, isn't important. What do you think about the tree now? thanks for all replys, Wessel |

Great improvement, Wessel. I like the larch very much now.The only change I might make, were it my tree would be to put a little movement(side to side) in the first branch, and I would reduce the apex back some more.Larches want to tall trees, and in my limited experience with them it is a constant struggle to control apical growth to balance growth lower on the branches.
Looks great, Mike |
