Help style my fuji cherry

Hi all
I've had this Fuji Cherry (prunus incisa) for 4 years now (originally garden centre stock) and I'm not quite sure which way to go with it. I can see possiblities for different cascades or an informal upright. What do you think?

Hi Treebeard (like the name... :-))

Here's my personal opinion : Cut of the tree at the yellow line. Wire up the highest left hand branch as a new leader. Wire some branches in the new apex down. Shorten and wire the lowest left and right hand branches as the first and second branch. This will bring the thickness of the trunk in proportion with the length of the tree. (can't make better virtual right now)
Or : put the tree in the ground or a large container to let it thicken.

regards, René

Hi Rene,

Thanks for your suggestions. I think I have interpreted them correctly. Is this what you had in mind?

Obviously the pot is now too big, perhaps the same style/colour pot but smaller?

Hi Treebeard,

You hit the nail right on the head ! That's exactly what I had in mind. Maybe some other forum members can give their opinion on this idea ??

Nice. No need to bring the crown even that far upright.

whats it like from the other side?

if you turn it around, so that branch sticking out the front is at the back, then wire up the trunk to the next point of growth and cut there, youd end up something like this

and then wait for new growth to get to something like this.

or maybe even move the angle over a bit - so the apex is in line with the base of the tree

just another thought

Hi Juliet,

nice design. the problem with having the back as the new front is the roots at the back are almost non-existant. Having said that your design works with the existing front too. if by "the branch at the front" you mean the second foliage pad up on the left on your virt, then that is actually at the back anyway.
There are enough branches (although it doesn't like it in the photo) on the tree to make it almost acheivable just with wiring, I wouldn't need to grow the top on much, just fill it out.
If it didn't quite end up as planned, then I can chop back and go with Rene's idea. can't lose either way!

Regards,
