Good advice so far, this is really helping me see the potential for my tree. I was concerned about the scar when I was talking with the guy at my local store and he suggested that I pick a number one branch out of the two lower right branches but leave both branches on as this would allow the bark to cover the scar faster. So by having two branches pushing bark Id cover the wound. Any truth to this or are we talking 15 years and just pick a number one now and put more energy into the chosen branch to thicken it up?

The open part of a wound that size on a trident maple wound will probably be gone in just a few years whether you do anything or not.
If you want it to heal well, take a sharp knife and score the inside edge of the cut down to cambium and cover the wound with cutpaste (not gorilla snot, aluminum foil, elmers glue or spit) and it will be gone in half the time. Regards, Matt

dustin, looks good so far, with time, you should be able to fill the gaps a little better in the canopy. for now i would suggest working on the wound and just maintain your pruning. i'm looking forward to this tree in another year. good luck
