I'd also recommend putting it in a very fast draining soil. Pootsie I believe says that his ficus do better the faster draining it is. Some adjustments could be made for your schedule, but the soil its in doesn't appear to drain too well.
WF ps. Ditto on all the comments re: ficus with jin/deadwood

Hi John,
I know you are kind of far away, but over Labor day weekend, the Missouri Botanical Gerden in St. Louis is hosting it's annual Japanese Festival. The Bonsai Society of Greater St. Louis is putting on a Bonsai Display and we will also have Lindsey Shibi in for some demos, workshops, critiques, etc. If you can find the time, you might do a road trip and come up for a day and talk to some on our guys about bonsia in general and if you want to bring your tree, we can talk about it too. Hope you can make it. It's a great time. Let me know if you need directions. Jeff. |

God, that is tempting. With gas prices the way they are I don't think I'd be able to make it. I am going to try to get to some in Kansas City, it's only about 3 hours away. Thanks for the invite...it's still a while off, so you never know, just look for someone who looks like my avatar...with a face.

Styling
Thanks folks. I'll avoid the jin and get faster draining soil.
Anyone got styling ideas? I'm thinking a trunk chop. Go for a broom style and get rid of that unsightly knot. Most of the branches are growing from the left side of that knot and it kind of throws it out off balance. Any ideas would help.

Ficus trim
Ficus will bud back very well whether its with a trunk chop, bud pinching, or selective pruning. I would recommend pruning initially so you can see how the tree responds. It will back bud enough for you to have all the branchs you want. If not do more pruning and or bud pinching until you get the branchs in the right places.
The ones that grow in the wrong places just remover while they are soft. But be patient, it will happen. Ficus like to be warm and bright light will keep the new foliage smaller. Good luck, .Hector Quote:

Thanks for your input Hector. I've been pruning it a branch at a time, just to see how it responds. It has done quite a bit of back budding, just not low enough on the tree. That's a sound suggestion, I don't know why I didn't think about it, prune, wait, prune further.
Thanks again. John

Little John,
The guys here have all given some really good advice. However, one thing is missing...timing. Ficus like to be worked on in the middle of summer. If you decide to chop this guy, make sure that you have enough warm weather left for it to recover. From your profile, I see that you are in Missouri. How soon does autumn come for you there? If you have any doubts about the amount of time needed for recovery, wait until next year to do the major work. Meanwhile, let the tree grow and get stronger. As you have discovered, these things grow like weeds, and recover rather quickly...as long as they are in the proper environment. Good luck! John L.

Pootsie, as always...roflmao...a 3 thousand word essay. I love the idea. Not as drastic as what I was thinking. Being that this is MY bonsai, my GF did NOT like the idea of chopping the trunk, but we love what you've illustrated. Very nice. I think that's what I will go with. Thanks so much.
jloeschner, sound advice. I appreciate it. I'm sure I've still got some warm weather left in the year, just not sure how much. I'll most likely stick it in a training pot next season and start with the reshaping then. Thanks to all of you who have given your advice. I'm very grateful and I will post pics later when it looks more like a bonsai and less like a mallsai. John
