Help Me Style My Liquidamber Orientis.
More images Picked up an older tree, approx. 2', 1.5" trunk caliper, and a lot of branches to chose from. I live in Cayucos and had to drive down to Kimura's in Northridge CA, well worth the trip! The trunk is very straight, except for the existing apex, which will be topped off at a later date, I think the tree is too tall. What else would you do for the styling of a formal upright? I will definately let the lower branches extend. Just learned it's a Liquidamber orientalis not a maple, I guess someone (me) made a mistake at the nursery yesterday, it's ok though because this tree is still going to be great. Well, with no movement, you need some taper in the trunk to make it look more like a tree. That means cutting it back by somewhere between 1/3 and 1/2 its current height and wiring up a promising branch to form a new leader (apex). Then regrow the top for a couple of years at least.
Somebody grew this tree pretty quickly and then just lopped off the top. You could just wire that \ tilted branch at the top and raise it up straight into a new top, but it's pretty far up there without having any taper in the trunkline beneath. It would probably only look convincing in a forest group of 3-7 similarly shaped trunks. Next time: no taper, no movement = no buy! Regards, Matt

hey, thanks for the info. Maybe I look around for a few more and do a forest planting due to the height.
If I do chop, late winter is the time, where would you do it? Maybe the sixth branch on the left? |

Have you heard of Muranaka's nursery in Nipomo? It is close to you. Good material

Yes, I have been down there many times. Great nursery, very nice father and son operation.

Late winter is good, also early spring before the new buds break open. The trunk really needs some taper as suggested. My first choice would be to cut back to the lowest mark(blue) on pic below. This will alow you great taper and the beginnings of some movement. another choice the the second mark up the tree(yellow) this will produce a more naturalistic style closer to the normal growth of the sweet gum. This is also a good time to begin exploring/training the surface roots for further developement.
