Re: Help me with my Azalea

I would chop the tall branches so as to give some strength to the tree, and then let all the others grow. In the fall I would select a new apex and a branch to form the cascade - if it was possible at this stage. Then I would let it grow without pruning to thicken the trunk, and nex fall I would trunk chop it and so on - could be totally stupid but thats what I think! >

Re: Help me with my Azalea

Well, the branch I used for the cascade is the only one that is long enough to do a thing like that, well, it had so small roots that I didn't prunned them as you said, and the idea of the box is to thiken the trunk, I totally agree with you on that, about the other thing... well, I didn't understand... but, I will wait until I get everybody's comment... thanks...

Re: Help me with my Azalea

I can't see much of the trunk, but if you are set on a cascade it would be good to get that apex bent around quicker, more like a question mark "?" than what you have going here.

It would also be a good idea to remove the competing growth from the base of the tree or it will sap all the strength away from your cascade.

You could wire that whip up, too. That is quite often done to develop informal upright trees. But keep in mind, with azaleas, much of the strength will go into the suckers and lower branches, so keep them under control.

Regards,

Matt

All right, I think I got a part of what you said, what do you think about it now?

Re: Help me with my Azalea

Okay there Jose,

Time to decide. Is it to be a slant style or a cascade?

There is no right answer. The only wrong answer is not to decide.

(Sorry I get zen when the temperature rises. We're in the low 90s today.)

Regards,

Matt

Re: Help me with my Azalea

Don't know, would you suggest? Or do I wait for it to develop and watch which gets better...?

Re: Help me with my Azalea

i totally agree with you matt. Also Jose, the tree looks quite young still and if u really wanted to develop a thicker foliage system u could take a risk and cut the tree back hard, as the internodal areas(ie the space between buds/leaf groups) look quite long. By cutting back you would promote more growth that u could be monitored and kept lush and thick by selective pruning and trimming. Remember, bonsai are a continuing work, you dont necessarily get results straight away. Sometimes you have to wait before the true form begins to shine through. But as always, everyones opinions differ and whatever decision you make, make sure you like what you've done, otherwise you will lose interest in your tree.

Good luck!
