I'm planning a group planting - not mame.

I'm looking at either 5 or 7 trees of between 20-35cm (8-14"). They will be upright (not sure how formal yet!). I'll use Naka's book for placement ideas.

I don't have a large enough pot though - I'm guessing it will need to be 50-60cm oval (18-22").

Yeah sounds about right to me, I have a 7 tree beech group in a plastic forest training pot of about that size.

Jonny.

Got any photos of your group?
How big are your trees?

I'm still torn between chopping them now or waiting another year. You'd think with 150 trees in the ground that I could just ignore these 2 for another year, wouldn't you?

They bug me every time I look at them now.

Jerry

If you are thinking of a group planting I would do as Matt says, cur some back now and leave some others to grow next year. That way you will have trees of varying thinkness to play with in the group.

You will also learn what difference a year makes

Regards
Ian

I pruned three "normally" and the ones in the photo are (est.) 25-50% greater girth after one season. I can't complain.

So I'll prune one and let the other grow further and see what happens.

Now back to a question I raised earlier - do you think there is any advantage to pruing it now, over pruning it in spring?

I always wait to prune until early spring, to see what branches have survived our winter. That way I don't cut off viable branches and get left with dead ones .

Being zone 8 you may not have as much of a problem with that as us zone 3'ers so maybe you can get away with it, if they bother you that badly . Anyone from a zone 8 location have an opinion?
