Grow Bed Elm - Cut Back Now Or Wait?

5year old Common elm in a grow bed.

I let them grow since May (2003) unrestricted.

They were 20cm/8" tall before, they are now 185cm/6ft. (Sept 2003).

Trunk is 50% larger now than similar elm not allowed unrestricted growth, so I'm all smiley right now.

My dilemma:

1) Cut them back and let another leader grow unrestricted next year?
2) Leave it to continue growing for another year like this?
3) And if I cut it should I do it now or wait for leaf drop (probably another month or 6 weeks away)?

I'm not planning root pruning yet - they've been in this position for 2 growing seasons now and I am adopting the 3 year cycle I saw recommended here.

Advice?

It's hard to say. I don't know if we're growing short little mame with fast taper or two-person sized trees to scare the neighbors? I can't tell what kind of growth you have at the base, because it's obscured by branches. I think though, that I would tend to let the leaders go at least another year if these are young trees. Having a tall leader whipping about in the breeze is a good way to encourage buttressing of the root base.

For you, I would suggest you let one elm grow and cut the other back, so you will know what difference it makes in a year or two.

Regards,

Matt

Jeremy, I'm doing the same thing you are and have the same questions. I saw a picture of Walter Pall's grow beds awhile back and it looked to me like he does not allow alot of unrestricted growth, so, for the most part, I've been doing more rather than less pruning, much of it pretty severe. I THINK that may give the trunks more character and taper over time and encourage the devlopment of nebari. Time will tell. It is pretty amazing how fast little trees grow in either grow beds or grow boxes. I think they grow faster in grow beds but develop better roots and nebari in grow boxes. I've been very encouraged over the last two years at how my seedlings are developing. I've been doing some repotting this last week in the belief that Fall will be OK for my deciduous trees, a number of which I collected Fall 2001. Gosh, I hope so. Dead trees are SO disheartening!

Dont worry Jeremy. I have seen worse. There was a person on ebay who posteda television and apparantly took the picture in his underwear. You could see him in his underwear in the reflection of the TV.

I agree with living art DBZ UGh!

Must be a popular thing to do this growing bed thing i'm doing the same and planted in april 2003! with some very similar stuff, I've decideed not to cut back and allow unrestricted growth for another year, however, that is because i'm not too worried about taper as they are going to become short broom style trees and the taper required was already present when i planted and i just want thickness. So might be worth considering what styles you envisage for the trees in the long run.

Jonny.
