Group Planting

Hello Everyone,

I took a day off from work yesterday to assemble a group planting with procumbens junipers. It looks like spring is almost here and it's time to repot.

These nursery stock trees were roughly pruned in June '02 and left as is until yesterday. They are from the same group as a couple of trees posted recently. First is the main tree before root pruning. (24" tall from soil).

I'll let it root in well and start to grow before removing some of the unneeded branches and thinning the canopies, with wiring coming next year.

I have to thank Guy Guidry for helping tweak the play of the trunklines and tree placement. He's a great artist and teacher, always willing to share his knowledge.

It's obviously still a long way from finished, but I'd like your opinions, comments, virtuals, etc....and be honest. I can take it, but please give me the thought behind your opinion. Maybe we can all learn something here.

David

David - this is really a nice grouping. I think the pot is a very good choice and I really like the movement in the trees

The only constructive comment that I can think of is that maybe there could be more height differentiation - perhaps one of the outside trees could be reduced? You mention working on the canopies at a later time - so you might already have this in mind.

Just a thought

Well the 3 trees you have are really beutiful.
I would suggest you to add some smaller trees at the back and some middle size at the middel to add the feeling of a forest.

Nice start to you group. I also would like to see some variations in height too. I guess that will be in the future after the trees have had time to recover and root well. Nice job.

Hi Bonitah,

Congratulations with the result. This is sure a good beginning of a wonderful group ! I agree with the others that you could try to get some variation in height. A few extra small trees would give the group more of a "forest feeling". I have a question. I see you must have trimmed the roots considerably to fit them in the shallow pot, and that you didn't trim the foliage. Will the trimmed roots be able to supply all that foliage with enough moisture ? I have allways heard that you should keep the roots and the foliage in balance. Just a question.

regards, René
