Question defoliation of japanese maple

Can somebody please tell me if it is too late in the year (in South-east England) to defoliate a very young japanese maple).

Also, how to protect it from frost in the winter without the use of a greenhouse?

Thanks!

Green mountain maple

This is the time of year to defoliate your maples and to summer prune. So here is a series of photos that show this technique. this first photo is the tree leafed out and ready to start defoliating.

This next photo is of the tree after defoliation. I cut the leaf stems not pull the leaves. This protects the buds that will develip at the base of each stem.

You can see how wild the limb structure has become. Maples are Apex dominant so this next photo shows how heavy the top of your maple can get.

These last two pictures show the tree after pruning and thinning out the limbs. First the crown.

And last the whole tree after pruning. You can see how much material has been removed from the trees limbs. Not to worrie as this little tree will bud out everywhere. It is now ready to grow its set of fall leaves. They should be smaller and have a better fall color. I will submit a new photo in 4 to 6 weeks when it has leafed back out.

Rips, Quick question. You say it is time to defoliate... I know you are in California. Is it still time in my area, Zone 5/6? I thought it might be to late here. How much time before dormancy can you do it?
