A Green Island Ficus styling...a photo essay

I've been working on a couple essays. I guess it's time to start them....

At the BSF convention in Gainsville over Memorial Day weekend I bought this REAL STRANGE GI Ficus from Mike Cartrett.
It originally had a long arcing aerial root starting at the top of the tree that was almost 2" across which, at some point, had dropped to the ground and rooted where the nurserycontainer sat, rooted into the ground and enlarged. It had also dropped some outside the pot closer to the trunk(s) but they hadn't enlarged too badly. I couldn't get it into the truck with the long thick root, the pot didn't sit flat ( the root was actually longer than distance to the ground probably due to the pot sitting on something as it formed), and it was ugly , so I sawed it off right there. It was well rooted and some "Watcher" gleefully took it home. I do wish I'd have snapped a picture of it however before I threw it away. You can see it's chop-joint at the top of the tree.
I decided to do a demo on it at our local club last week. Here are some pics up to the point I started wiring.
You'll note that local speakers get the best places to work!

I took a couple shots before I started work. You'll notice the big long aerial root is chopped off and I also cut off some long branches in Florida before I put it in the van.
I had to have help with cutting it out of the old container since big roots were growing out of drain holes.
I'm starting to rake-out rootball and untangle aerial roots to lay them back into the new pot nicer.

Some more root raking, trimming large roots on bottom and cutting away at a large knob on bottom. I think I can fit it into one of my pots .
BTW, This is the time of year to do this work on tropicals in zone 5, during our hottest and most humid times June-August.
Then I started selecting a pot. My FIRST choice was a round pot, then oval but I had neither ( Except in Mica ) so I took a couple rectangles and a shallow oval I had made. I didn't really know ahead of time what kind of rootball I would end up with, but I knew I would need a pot about 14-15" inside.
I finally decided on a nice Chinese unglazed pot in a redish color which snugly held the tree. I think I actually liked it better than I'd hoped for with a round or oval

After potting it up I thinned out more branches I knew I wouldn't want/need and started to do some wiring.
I didn't have much time to do wiring so I only wired the top. I wanted to show how I was going to treat the tricky and sparce top with the cut off large aerial root and get it going in the right direction for a rounded dome type of tropical tree top. You can see the big aerial root cut god in the 4th picture.
I finished wiring at home over the next two days.
When it stops raining and I can get it to a spot with a good background I'll get some pictures. It's thinned out and ready to stasrt filling in some wired branches.

I was fortunate enough to attend this demo...the first demo I have ever seen. I was just to Dale's right, about 4 feet away, so I had a perfect view of everything going on.

It was really nice to see it done in person - very informative. I can't wait to see how this tree looks once you've got it all wired.

Thanks again for the demo! See you at the August meeting when I plan on joining the club.

Jeez, Dale, That's one big nasty-looking ficus It's gonna be a heavy sum-b$%&* to be moving inside in the fall .

Wish there were ficus like this around here in the non-tropical U.S. One like this might change my mind about not keeping "indoor" bonsai. Already a very nice tree, on it's way to being an excellent one, I think.

Thanks Adam, I think you'll enjoy the club.
Mark and Andy, this really isn't all that heavy. It's easily a one-man-tree. I have many that aren't however, although most are hardy trees, there are a couple that do need to come inside. I have a large two-man Ch. Elm that must come in and go down basement stairs. It's a real pain for me and whoever volunteers to help that day! But, these are storiesmost of us are familiar with.
BTW, my other Bougie essay is one other indoor tree in winter that has been a serious "lift".
