Got this Lime for Christmas...

Got this huge Lime for Christmas.
It looked totally different, but I already trimmed it into a triangular form. Will make a nice twin trunk, no?

Should do, we talking linden here? When are you going to get working on some wiring?
Another option is always to remove the lower branch if you dont like it, once its job is done thickening up the trunk.
By the way welcome to Btalk, thought you would find your way here eventually!

Yes, Tilia Cordata.
I actually like the lower branch. I will plant the tree a little deeper next spring, and I already removed the reversed taper half way up the tree.
Wiring?
Good idee, I will do it tomorrow...

After wiring, creating a new top and bringing the two trunks closer together. Still a long way to go...

Considering the available buds, this is how the tree will probably look next summer...

Now it looks like this. I will have to straighten the small trunk tough...

Very cool. There are several massive T. cordata where I live, but I've never considered growing them for bonsai. How well do the leaves reduce?

From what I saw at the Ginkgo Bonsai Nursery nearby, the leaves reduce well. They look good as they are if the bonsai is about 50cm heigh.

I also straightened the second trunk...

Be careful about not using cushioning when guy wiring branches - the forces involved can easily mar branch & trunk, crushing the cambium layer. The best form of cushioning is thin plastic aquarium tubing cut to size. Thread it over your guy wires at both ends and you're set.

You've done a good job making the shape of the daughter trunk more believable.

Maybe a little thread grafting and / or surface layering will be the next port of call to raise the nebari to the point where the daughter trunk originates.
