So you picked these in the Autumn/Fall and refrigerated them until late winter to plant out?

sMaple seed

If you really want a large number of maples be sure to not cover the seed with soil. Prepare your box with good drainage and bonsai soil, then about 1/2 inch of good humus. Scatter your seeds on top of the humus. They love to start that root and then push it down into the soil. Next, the seed will lift the seed pod and the whole wing up into the air.

If you want to see the difference, plant half and cover them, and scatter half on top, and count the survivors.

seeds

Thats Ok. This is how we collect seeds off of maples. We spread two overlapping tarps around our target tree and then three big men grab the trunk and shake. This will often result in filling several 1 gallon plastic bags with seeds.

Wow! Nice going, Kazuki. Mine are still in the fridge, but they haven't started to germinate yet. I'll plant them soon, though, and see what happens. Maybe in early March. I think I'll try Glenn's humus method...

All the best,
Carl / OMC

Seeds are so much FUN! I think Mother Nature puts them on trees as much for our enjoyment as to propogate the trees! I love collecting seeds of all kinds and seeing what happens when I plant them.

Right now, I have about 10x as many year old Sugarberry seedlings from a pocketful of berries that I collected about 18 months ago then I'll ever have any use for. Don't ask me what I'm going to do with them. Just continue to have fun, I guess. I put some J. maple seeds into a couple of pots last Fall and I'm waiting to see what they do. Also, some Amur Maple seeds. As well as some Persimmons, Japanese Honeysuckle, Spicebush, Peaches and others that I don't even remember. Enough for 50 bonsaists, if Ron Martin's numbers on how many trees a single Bonsaist can reasonably care for are close to accurate. And I'm looking for more seeds this Spring!

Oh well, I'm not any more cruel than Mother Nature, even if I dump 95% of them.

Regards, Fred
