"Golden Gate" Ficus Microcarpa
All,
Here are some pictures of my "Golden Gate" Ficus microcarpa. You may remember a couple of months ago I posted a description of a restyle in this post Normal? Since this restyle, this tree has continued to grow vigorously, in some places extending over 2" and ramified considerably. The wire has since been removed, and I plan on giving this tree at least another week or so of rest before I rewire and work more on the shape. As you can see this tree has some problems, first and foremost being the bar branch. I know one of them has to go. My initial feelings are that the left one should be the one. With the crown heading in that direction, and my vision of this tree having a banyan style top, that is what's logical to me. The nebari needs some work, but the last time I worked on this tree I kept 3 good size branches and rooted them. All 3 cuttings took and growing well, so I will be trying some approach grafts in the spring. I would like to ask for you to please be kind with your comments, but that's not what I really want. Please be honest I can take it, and of course virtuals are welcome with open arms. Thanks Adam Front view, as of last night: |

And just for reference, this is what the tree looked like in July right after I moved into my new house and realized that trying to grow this tree at my desk at work was not going to be successful.

Adam, I am not familiar with the growth characteristics of your fig as I do not have any experience with this species. In particular, can one reduce the size of the leaves? If this is possible you might consider air-layering the top of the tree to create something like this. Please note that for this to work the leaf size should be reduced and the crown will require some refinement.

Hank,
Thanks for the virtual. As for the leaves, I defoliated this tree once and when the new leaves grew back they came back much smaller, but within a month even in full sun they started to get bigger once again. I don't know if it will be possible to keep them small enough to reduce the tree and still keep it convincing. My goal was actually to get the tree a bit bigger (as you can see by the large pot it's in). Thanks again Adam |

Biggest concern is the nebari - next repot, do what you can to spreadout the rootbase and then maybe place a tile of some sort under the base to keep the roots spreading and improving it.
I think you will also eventually have to remove one of the bar branches. If you intend for the top to continue the move toards the left, kepping the right side one as a conterbalance, design wise, might make sense. JMHO
