"Golden Gate" Ficus
I love this variety....i guess some would call it "Kingman" or "Tigerbark"....i bought a few 4" pots of it from Brussels years ago and now it is the predominant(sorry,my spelling is atrocious) variety in my collection.
This particular one started as a cutting...into a 3 gal. pot.....into a 7 gal. pot....into a 25 gal. pot....into a 3' X 3' X 6" growing box....and today into this "bonsai" pot....all in all about 6 years of growing......I think it's time for some refinement.Any suggestions/virtuals/criticisms/questions are welcome. thanks, andy |

wow, thats gorgeous, I hope I can attain that level of quality some day...my suggestion though, have some more negative space, trim it up a little so you can see branches, unless you don't want to show something
![]() Edit: I look at it more, and I think your getting away with something in the crown. The roots draw lots of attention compared to the top. On purpose maybe? Last edited by breefe : 12-Sep-2004 at 10:31 PM. |

hiding something?
breefe,
I am indeed hiding something ....the apex is in much need of work(big scars),the roots need smoothing out...there is almost no real ramification. This is what i would call "pre bonsai" material, though i intend to enjoy it for its present appearance as much as i will enjoy the transformation ....hopefully,in 2 or 3 years it will be approaching the condition and shape of my following virtual. In the meantime i will try to keep y'all posted on the the progress.(and processes) andy |

I still think it looks great at its stage. The bottom is good and your working on the top, great piece, good luck...
not sure how well the blue pot is working though...just isn't working visually.. but thats for another day I suppose. |

Gee, Andy.
I was just at a workshop (At Bill Vlavanis' convention, in Rochester, with Pedro Morales - pix to come later) where the Tiger Bark Ficus turned out to be described as F. Retusa 'Green Emerald. As I recall, the trunk markings are much stronger of F. Kingman. Jerry? |
