Gnarly old juniper

My wife has dubbed this juniper, "Dragoncloud". The span from left to right is about 40 inches.

Hi Mike

I really like your juniper. It's almost Kimura-esque.

How do you feel about flattening the foliage pads, instead of the current round-ish shape?

Regards,
Attila

Hi Attila
Thanks for your kind words. Regarding the foliage pads, I feel that flattening them might be too formal for this tree. For junipers like this and for some of my California junipers, I prefer the "rolling cloud" effect. Now, in the case of pines, I will go for the flattened pads.

Regards
Mike

Thinking about it, it does make sense. That's in fact resembles the way they grow in nature.

Great tree, great work, Mr. P!

I agree, tame pads would not work with the wild trunks.

Much as I disdain over-use of those egg-shell pots, might I suggest this tree would work well with one? The round pot is too tame for the wild image, IMHO.

I'm not sure if you wanted a virtual, but I offer mine nonetheless. I'm not satisfied with the pot choice (yours or mine) but a tree needs a pot so here's my offering.

Pootsie, are you referring to a crescent pot? I've never seen one that big. Maybe Sara could make it.
Bwaynef, thats a wild rendition you did. Good work.

At first it may seem drastic. I removed foliage/shortened the foliage extending to the right from the bottom most branches (and saved those for future jins.) Then tilted the top foliage down to the right a little, which should be possible still as those areas have less deadwood and are fairly thin (at least in comparison.) I think I tilted the entire planting a little to the right to accentuate the deadwood a bit. I do like the pot I've chosen better than the current pot, but its not perfect either. I don't know if the rootage will allow for a shallower pot yet.

This lends itself to a future windswept or the classic "triangle" bonsai. Nothing TOO drastic when you get down to brass tacks.

Mr P,

Excellent, excellent, excellent tree. Beautiful, fantastic, interesting movement. Wild and scary! Immediately grabs me by the scruff of the neck and transports me to its wild, wind-swept, rainy mountain. Yep, I like this tree.

I love it when I see a tree with this quality that can't be pigeon-holed straight away into one of the classic forms.

Personally (you'll like this Poots), I'm not sure about a rock/egg shell/half moon/Euro pot for this. Moving the tree a little to the right in the pot it's already in works for me.

Thanks for sharing.

Fish.
