I would not reccomend wiring it. The Fukien Tea branches do not take to wire well. Pruning should be fine. You have the style pretty much set, just a light prune and repot should make it into a nice little shohin tree.

Yes, a new shallower and smaller pot. And prune it ..

Yea, Fukiens respond well to pinch and grow methods. However, I wouldn't do anything just yet because if you have only had it for a few weeks you should make sure it is healthy and putting out new growth first.

Pot will make the difference

First of all, I wish you better luck with fukien tea than I have had!!! Cats killed both of mine.

I believe that your tree would benefit most from another pot. My opinion would be a medium-shallow oval pot with a light glaze. If the root system would allow it, I would think a depth of about twice the thickness of the trunk (since it's a young tree) would be about right. I would want the length of the pot to be roughly two thirds (or double this if you want to exaggerate the negative space) of the height of the tree. Positioning the tree to the left (as you face it) of the pot with some negative space to its right would enhance its in-scale appeal.

With patience and using the clip and grow method, I believe the tree would be a nice shohin specimen in moyogi style. Keep an eye on insects though!!!

Best wishes and good luck. I hope I said something that was helpful.

John

Shohin are smaller Bonsai trees up to 10 inches in height. They include trees in the Shito category up to 3 inches, Mame bonsai between 3 and 6 inches, and Shohin trees up to 10 inches.

i also would leave it as is as far as pruning. switching pots is a good idea, but i too would wait until the tree proves its health by sprouting new growth. after that, i would like to see this tree with a fuller top foliage in the future, but everything else about it makes for a nice shohin tree. good luck.
