Question Gardenia Help Needed

I was fortunate to stop by a grocery store "garden center" right after they had received a shipment of gardenias and had mismarked them at US20.00. I spotted this one from across the the parking lot!
The tree is 26' tall and the nebari is 5" across. the only problem with it is that a few inches above the top of the photograph the trunk begins a noticeable inverse taper.
Question 1: Can I cut off the trunk and get new growth?
Question 2: If so, how long might it take to have sufficient growth to have blossoms and begin training? I live in Heat Zone 6.

Yes, gardenia is a shrub that you can prune at will.. The end of dormancy is a good time. First time you prune you might want to leave a little foliage on, and see how the plant responds.

Regards,

Matt

Forgive my Gardenia pricing ignorance - but why do you consider $20 mis-priced? What's the usual price?

Does it look like it may be grafted in the inverse taper area?
a full pic will help .. if it is you may not have a good flowering variety below the graft.. just a warning.. they do graft gardenias for fungus problems..

For Jeremy...
I just saw a gardenia in a 3-gallon pot with a twig-like trunk on sale at a nursery for $29.00.
I think wmason got a steal on this one!

Gardenia full pic

Jerry - A typical nursery price on a gardenia this size would be $70 US.

Tom - There is no graft on the taper. I can't tell for certain if there is a graft scar just at the top of the nebari.

Branching

Here is a pic of the top of the trunk. Looks to me like the trunk was cut off as all branched emerge at the point. But then I know zip about gardenia habit.

well, it doesn't look like it is grafted.. I'd follow Matt's suggestion and take it down slow.. as for how long.. all depends on how vigorously it breaks low. Time will tell this tale. There is a dwarf variety with skinny smaller leaves and the flowers about half the size ..

Thanks Tom.

I've been keeping my eyes peeled for that dwarf gardenia. 'Rubicans', I seem to recall.
