Future Of This Acer Palmatum?

Hi again,

I really like this forum and the qualified answers I am getting. Thank you!

I have another little plant. It is a Acer palmatum which I bought two years ago together with my little apple. These were my starting 'potensais'.

But, similar to the apple there was no big development during these two years. So, I potted it in a growing box as well.

I would be very interested in your ideas on what to do next with it. Chop it right now (if so where?), let it grow?

So thank you again in advance,

Greetings from Salzburg, Austria

Thomas

Thomas, I think the answers you got to the apple holds for this tree as well. Let it GROW. Trunk chops done for taper are done when the tree is approaching the size you want. It would be good to allow the tree to grow in the box (or ground) until the trunk is say 60- 70% of the thickness you desire. Then make a chop at the proper place, give the new leader a year or three to grow and then chop it again along the new leader. This way as the lower section grows out the middle will grow and the top will grow all blending in for a believable taper.

The aboe is what I've ingested (learned) and have not as of yet applied the techique myself.

Good luck

Jay

HI there,
Whatever you do, I think a few things need attention right away.

The areas marked in light blue are going to continue to grow and get bigger. The branches coming out of the knuckle will grow and get larger forcing the area to get even larger and causing a big ugly ball to form there. Prune out all but one branch, if you intend to let it grow.

The areas marked in green, are long internodal growth that has caused the trunk to grow real fast but not support many branches. Prune back the branches hard to induce some budding along the trunk. Let these grow out, and choose some alternating branching to achieve form. Or,... you could let those whips grow long, and do a thread graft on about May first. Do about 5 or 6 to have something to choose from in case some do not take.

The areas marked in Red. This new shoot or shoots are already trying to compete for the apex. You have to select the one you want to keep. I suppose you will opt for the larger one to keep a somewht tree like form. But if it were me, I would prune out the larger stuff on the right and start the new tree from the shoots that are growing straight up. That way you could concentrate on the branching more.

BTW, maple branches always come of the trunk or branches in opposing pairs. One pair will come off east and west and the next pair of buds will be a little further up and come off at north and south. Select alternating buds, rub off opposite buds and ramify your branches from there.

Itchy

Thumbs up Thank you

Thank you Jay and Itchy,

your hints are really helpful. I lean towards putting these into practice. What I am still not clear of yet is which should be the new leader (in Itchys pic: the red branch or the current trunk).

Thank you again!

Thomas

Wiring?

By the way,

what do you think of wiring the branches in down in a horizontal or even further down?

I know that Acer Palmatums are very sensitive regarding wiring.

Would you recommend it?

Regards

Thomas

I'm not sure how desirable this look is. It's certainly has been a common one, but a maple isn't a pine. Look at how they grow naturally. The branches don't go down like a those of a snow-battered pine tree. More or and more people are starting to style maples more along the lines of their natural growth habit, with the branches moving upward. Personally, I like that look so long as naturalism is not used as an excuse for carelessness.

Best regards,
Old Mister
