I've got a couple of Gingko cuttings I took last year myself and they
appear to they all made it through the winter all right. Your Ginkgo forrest is a great idea, I will have to try this myself sometime. I really do love Gingkos, I just wish they would be a bit more accomodating in how you can work them for bonsai... Stefan

Not concerned about the pic quality on these trees. They are not worth much effort. Just trying to share the idea not the trees. |

Nope, couldn't afford one of those lovelies, but what I could afford is this guy from the image. Picked it up at a bargain last year. It has a terrible slingshot, and will probably be air-layered in around June right at the split I think. Then give me another year or five, and possibly I could come up with something leaning towards a flame style.
Big Gingko's are actually surprisingly cheap around here, saw 4m high trees with 2-3" caliper trunk going for around 35,-... You'd need to chop it down to a foot or two, but you could do that right at the garden center if you dare and they'll let you. ![]() I haven't managed to work up the nerve yet to chop down a big tree right there at a garden center, but If I come across something like that again, maybe next time I will... ![]() Stefan

G'day Stefan, By around here I presume you mean Den Haag, wondering if you know Pim van Elst, if not do you want to make contact with him, he supplies me with much/many [but not all] of my trees. Has fairly good Ginkgos available, most times, and a discovered source, of wonderful Larix kaempferi yamadoris, his prices are very affordable. Trick is that he lives up north in Drenthe. Just let me know if you are interested and I'll send you his address privately. As to chopping trees down at garden centers, I have no problem with that, I pay first, then chop whatever, my transport is Amsterdam Metro-trams-and buses, no car available....tough ;-)) Regards, Nigel

Forgot to mention, that the above URL [in Belgium] will take you to an interesting site where you can buy FEMALE Ginkgos, Ginkgo Hayanarii, I think it's called, at really affordable prices and he sends by post, bought a small one and the buds are just beggining to pop, also took a small cutting from the same young'n, and it appears to have taken to root. Suggest you cantact him if you're interested in having a Female tree, as they are very hard to find. Also If you know of a source where I can find definite Variegated Ginkgos, that is those fellas with the variegated banded green and yellow leaves, please let me know, searching hi'n'low for this bloke. BTW, I really like the look of your tree, but I would reduce the height a tad of just one of those two upright branches, and probably wire it outwards, giving it a wider spread....Nice one dude. Regards, Nigel
