Formal Upright Juniper

On another forum last June I posted a Foemina juniper that had been on my benches for a few years but I had never done anything with it. I did not originally stayle the tree and it was given to me by a friend. The tree was hard wired into the clay pot and was in terrible condition. In the before pictures you will note a very healthy albeit over grown bush. The condition the tree was in whan I got it was not this good.

In June I decided to start doing some work to the tree. It had set long enough. The tree was an upright tree alright but had a small bend in the trunk on the best view of the trunk. The tree has a large shari on the front I did not do. It is OK and will add much interest to the trunk when its finished.

The tree was wired over hard with a block of wood as a fulcrum and the trunk was bent staright with a clamp. The top wire was put on and the tree was pruned and wired for shape as a rough styling. The pruning was done hard, almost back to the point that the green was only 1/4 inch past the dead needles. This induces a very large flush of buds on healthy junipers.

Ok so in the trident thread when I called Bonsai Outlaw a chicken for not participating in a thread he wanted so badly, I told him I was disgusted and was going out to work on a tree. This was the victim.

I focused all my digust on the poor hapless pine tree styled juniper and dewired and rewired all the branches and pruned back hard again.

This reminds me....[note to self] I need to get disgusted more often...

Best in bonsai, Al

The tree stands 32 inches tall and the basal flare is 3.5 inches and the trunk at the base above the flare is 2.5 inches.

I like this juniper as a lone tree or if it were included in a group. Are all the jins going to be retained? I have a Monterey pine which is going to end up looking very similar as I am not a big fan of formal upright. That is except for those dawn redwoods you showed which are in a class all by themselves.

No. There are a couple on the trunk that seem to point upwards and they will come off for sure. This will not be planted as a forest tree. If I do would have to reduce in height the whole forest I have now because this tree is a little shorter than the largest tree in the firest now. This trunk on this tree is much larger than the largest tree in the grove. So it would have to be cut down to compensate for the discrepancy.

I think it will make a pretty good stand alone tree in a good rustic nanban pot. Probably a pot about 15 inches across.

G'day Al...

Your "focussed disgust" resulted in a great start on your juniper...you've got a winner in the making...

I notice the Jin's pointing upward, compared to the growth/styling of the rest of the branches. Is this intentional or still work in progress?
