Foggy Morning

Hello Everyone,

It's our first foggy fall morning of the year, so I went out to enjoy the quiet and take a few record shots of a few trees. The first is an update on a JBP in development. A few sacrifice branches will be coming off after it goes dormant later this year.

Next is a cascade that's crying for a restyling. Another late fall project.

Thats a pretty amazing cascade you've got there, fair bit of work involved in keeping that one looking nice I'm sure.

David, like the Pine...Love the cascade, can you give some sizes please. Also how much will you be restyling it? Is this a good time, I realize you can do more than I...Zone 5/6 vs 8.
regards
Jay

And a small san jose that is just starting to regain some strength after a weak spring and summer.

Jay,,,, The training pot for the pine is 20" wide. The cascade pot is 15" tall. I find that from mid/late November on into mid winter is good timing to style procumbens in Zone 8. I'm thinking of a major restyling to take advantage of a really nice apex structure.

treenut,,, This tree got one wiring two years ago and has only been occasionally thinned since....no pinching. Very little work so far, but there is a much better tree hiding in there. The third angle is near the new front.

Best Regards,

David

David, thanks. Your work with your camera is as good as your trees, which are beautiful.

Your work has a sense of focus on individual trees which I'm very impressed by. I've tried to collect alot of material which I now have growing in a large number of pots and 4 grow beds. I'm very fond of every tree I've started or collected, but what I've done has a sense of being too scattered and the "trees are lost in the forest". I think that I want to somehow create an area of focused individual pieces away from the grow boxes, grow beds and nursery containers, where individual trees stand out. Your "photographic essay" kind of reinforces this feeling that it is now time to pick out a few individual trees to focus on. Most of my work for the past two years has been focused on mastering the horticultural aspects of bonsai. I still make the occasional mistake there, but, by and large, I feel pretty good about my ability to keep trees alive, even very sick or damaged trees. But, the artistic aspects are where I now need to focus. Thanks for your pictures which, as the wise man sayeth, are "worth a thousand words".

Fred

Hi David,

Nice to get a peek at your benches. I really like the cascade. I'll give you a hand to wire it all you have to do is pay the airline ticket

It looks like you have plenty of room there to expand your show area

Regards

Ian
