First Collected Juniper
I've attached a couple of pictures of a Juniper (any idea what kind?) that I collected from my Aunt's farm recently. Forgot to include anything for size reference, but it is about 2' tall and the trunk is about 6" diameter at soil line. Unfortunately, alot of the deadwood doesn't show up well in the pictures. My big question is - should I work on the deadwood this summer (preserve it)? Some of it is pretty soft (not quite rotten, yet) and I wouldn't want to let it get too far gone. Messing with the dead wood won't disturb the tree, will it? I was planning on doing nothing at all to the tree (the living part) this year, except let it recover.

Jeff, these are really pretty "starters". I'd like to have these two myself!
I can't tell you what to do with them, but I do know what I'd do. Pretty much nothing, for probably two years. I'd put them into grow boxes, with the intention of giving them time to establish new, compact root systems. I don't know what your root balls looked like, but I'd be surprised if the came up with anything like the flat, compact root pads they will to live in small pots. I'm very cautious with trees that have significant size to them when they are initially collected, as these do. From what I've read, most growers are. I do not know what species or variety these are. From their loooks, they are very suitable for bonsai. Fred |

Maybe you could identify the deadwood. I see one thick straight piece in the center, but I am not sure what other parts you are talking about. Most of the other branches appear to be alive, and the little twigs that might be dead are really to far outside any potential design to be of concern, as far as I can tell!

I will try to take some better shots this evening. However, the one you mention is the primary one, the rest is mostly on the trunk. I'm still trying to figure out how to add lines, circles, etc. to pictures with the package that I have. I'm thinking I need a better photo editing package!
