Kevin,

I used cocopeat as a medium for the layer. I've found it works well for this sort of things. I don't have many problems making a layer. First take some plastic, wrap that around the trunk and secure it below the cut with some wire. (make sure the opening is pointing up). Then you have a little bag that you can easily fill up with medium. When your finished, wrap around the top end and secure that too. This usually works for me without too much trouble.

Matt,

When I made the cut I not only scraped away the bark but I also cut away a piece of the wood underneath. I always do that. Do you know what portion of the wood transports water ?

René

Hi René

Nearly the entire woody trunk of a young tree is capable of transporting water. Cells in the cambium die, lose their cytoplasm and nucleus and become part of the xylem tissue adapted to transport water.

Air layering works by interrupting the flow of sap downward through the phloem, stimulating root development. Water transport upward, through the xylem remains active.

Matt
